VFX and compositing for the short film Our First Priority — a nebula and a red-rimmed plasma field built entirely in comp, from full strength around a performer to an atmosphere pass viewers would never catch.
An atmosphere pass across all 214 frames of the nurse shot with nothing to key against.
None of the effect was shot. A nebula and a red-rimmed plasma field are built entirely in comp around a single performer. A low glow starts behind the curtain, the room opens into a nebula behind him, and the plasma grows until it is at full strength, wrapped around him.
The effect changes strength from shot to shot. One shot is curtains alone on an empty stage with it dialled almost to nothing. In the nurse shot, a single atmosphere pass runs across all 214 frames with nothing to key against and nothing localised. Eleven shots, the same nebula, each shown plate against comp, with the reel as delivered alongside.
