The Project

Hi-YAH! is a martial arts streaming network featuring hundreds of hours of classic and modern films — from Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Tony Jaa, and more. They needed a launch trailer that captured the energy, chaos, and soul of the genre in a single piece.

The Solve

Created a trailer consisting almost entirely of audio clips and sound effects sampled from classic martial arts films. Using Ableton Live, composed an original music track by matching video cuts with audio while building the song in real time. Hi-YAH! continues to use this trailer on their landing page today.

Music & Sound Design

Launch trailer · 2020 · scored in Ableton Live from the films' own hits, strikes and punches

The score is the fight. Nearly every sound in the trailer — the beat, the fills, the drops — is a hit, strike or punch lifted from the channel's own films, cut and tuned in Ableton Live against picture. The edit and the song were built at the same time, so the cuts land on the beat because the beat is made of the cuts.

Process

Built in Ableton Live

The entire track was produced in Ableton Live — sampling audio from dozens of martial arts films, syncing hits to video cuts, and layering effects into one musical composition.

Music as Editing

The editing process was inseparable from the music production. Every video cut was placed to land on a beat, and every audio sample was chosen to serve both the rhythm and the visual narrative. The result is a trailer that doubles as a song.

Source Material

Pulled audio from dozens of classic martial arts films across Hi-YAH!‘s catalog — dialogue snippets, fight foley, weapon impacts, and iconic yells. Each sample was cleaned, pitched, and arranged to create melodic and percussive elements within the composition.
